Established in Komsomolsk-on-Amur in 1934, the aircraft production association manufactured aircraft designed by the famous Russian designers, Andrei Tupolev, Sergei Iliushin, Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich (who always worked in tandem), and Pavel Sukhoi. The last-named, in fact, made the enterprise familiar around the world as manufacturer of fighting aircraft, in particular, the SU-7 and SU-17 fighter-bombers, forming the striking core of the air force in Russia and many other countries.
Mass production of the SU-27 fighter aircraft and of its modifications, including the carrier-based SU-33, the multi-purpose SU-30MK fighter and the SU35/SU-35UB multifunctional super-maneuverable fighter plane, has put the Association among the Russia's leading aircraft manufacturers. The enterprise is the biggest exporter in this country's aircraft industry.
Today, the Association is a dynamic enterprise keen on adopting the latest breakthroughs in science and technology for production purposes. It stands out for its quality policy that is aimed at winning more ground in world markets.
The Association is conducting several civil aviation programs, including production of a regional SU-80 airliner and a light BE-103 amphibious plane, a pilot SA-20P amphibious aircraft, and several small-size aircraft types.
The Association has won several Russian and foreign awards. On the basis of its performance results in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001, the enterprise was named by the Russian Ministry of Trade the best Russian exporter of specialized technology and was rewarded with a number of other prestigious Russian prizes and awards. In 1999 and 2001, it was named the best Russian enterprise in two nominations - the highest efficiency of all production assets and the highest financial efficiency. In August 2001, the Association was awarded the Golden Idea Second Prize for its successful performance in the manufacture of export-oriented products of military applications. In the same year, it won the top prize at the National Competition among Russian high social efficiency organizations and the Russian National Olympus prize. The Aircraft Production Association was awarded the SPI medal in Paris in November 2002.
